165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles (165排骨虾面), Bukit Merah Central

165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles (165排骨虾面), mala kolo pork rib prawn noodles

The bowl that piqued my curiosity from 165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles (#01-3683, 165 Bukit Merah Central) was their mala kolo pork rib prawn noodles. A handful of descriptives in the name I know. What made it stand out was the use of kolo mee which was my first encounter for local prawn noodles and on top of that, it's been mala-cized. Possibly the first of its combination around.

It's neither 麻 nor much 辣. I could even spruce the noodles up with some sliced chillis. Pretty savoury and also a little sweet. The last part bothered me a little. Pork ribs were well marinated and slurp off the bone tender. This was the large bowl and I had four prawns which I wished were shelled. I didn't get the same impact for a local mala-cized bowl of noodles as the bak chor mee from Shiok Shiok Noodles which IMO had a more solid mala infusion. I also would have preferred more bite to these noodles.

While a certain publication would describe the flavour of their soup as "pork-forward", I didn't feel that way. It was a solid prawn broth for sure but it was also a little too sweet without a certain roundness would have made it more impressive. There's a good body to it but I just felt it lacked a certain something I couldn't put my finger to. Also bothered me that there was also quite a bit of oil on the surface.

Hajjah Syed Meeral, Pasir Panjang Food Centre

Hajjah Syed Meeral, idly masala vadai

I saw someone order a bunch of fat looking idlis the previous time I was here from Hajjah Syed Meeral (#01-27 Pasir Panjang Food Centre, 121 Pasir Panjang Road) so I decided to get some - along with one of their masala vadai which I had tried and liked that previous time. I liked this. Those idlis were rustic looking and a little rough in appearance but it was no less satisfying drenched in the savoury sambar and coconut chutney. There's a particular spice that's pretty prominent in the masala vadai but I can't put my finger to it. That one's pretty good also. Great spot for breakfast.

More food from Jtown Cafe

Jtown Cafe, bakmie ayam belado

I noticed their bakmie ayam belado on a neighbouring table the last time we were here and it looked good. Man this one sure packed serious heat. The chillis turned out to be more spicy than it looked. It was also less stew-y compared to their bakmie ayam cabe ijo which had more chicken flavour. That one didn't have so much burn. Couldn't say which one I liked better because both were good in their own ways.

Jtown Cafe, martabak butter sugar

Managed to also break out of their martabak manis campur and got the polo which had just butter and sugar. Or was that margarine? I liked that they didn't stinge on both ingredients in the pancake. Yummy!

Pizza and saltimbocca from 2it & drink

2it & drink, romana buffalo mozzarella

For reasons, we've eaten at 2it & drink a number of times but yet have visited their parent Otto Ristorante. Anywaysss....Romano pizza from their menu topped with additional buffalo mozzarella. One gets to choose if those mozzarella go into the oven with the pizza or are served freshly slice on top of it. Those olives sure were juicy.

2it & drink, saltimbocca

There was a saltimbocca for the weekend special. Pork was lean but the masala wine sauce and the truffle mash helped. Deliciously salty and savoury perfumed with sage.

Tora Tora Tora, Oxley Bizhub 2

Tora Tora Tora, kaisen don

I had to get lunch here (#11-19 Oxley Bizhub 2, 62 Ubi Road 1) so I ended up with a kaisen don. One with vinegared rice. Not bad tasting if I might say so. Those maguro chunks was pretty good eating and there were scallops and ikura as well. What pleasantly surprised me was the wasabi - it's the grated stuff. All these in a bowl less than $20 at the roof of Oxley Bizhub 2. They even have Asahi Kuronama on tap.

Rose flavoured Lay's potato chips from Scarlett Supermarket

Rose flavoured Lay's potato chips

Picked up a bunch of unusual sounding snacks from Scarlett Supermarket (思家客) at Chinatown Point. We haven't been here for a while and some new things have snuck into their shelves. Can you see it? The rose potato chips...

Rose flavoured Lay's potato chips

Here's a closer look at it.

Rose flavoured Lay's potato chips

The speckles make them look like whole grain chips. There's definitely rose flavour in there so what I was trying to get used to was saltiness because I've only experienced rose with desserts or bandung. They're also a little tangy.
