We discovered Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh (4, Jln 2/137B, Resource Industrial Center, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, tel : +60 16-327 3567) from social media and were looking forward to the visit because it's the lamb version of bak kut teh.
There's a stand of theirs at the front of the shop selling lamb curry puffs.
We got one of them lamb curry puffs to start. The fried pastry was filled generously with little chunks of spicy savoury lamb and potatoes.
Some rice wine with peach oolong & Yakult and an awesome dazzling fruit tea. Drinks here were packed with flavour and well made.
Sauces for the food. The fermented bean curd dip tasted like it had sesame sauce in it though I cannot be sure if I tasted that correctly. Liked that there were two sauces because the light soya sauce with chilli felt like a better dip towards the end of the meal when all the richness had gotten into you.
Their signature yang kut teh has bits of various lamb parts like tripe, belly, rib and meat balls; not forgetting also dried bean curd skin and enoki mushrooms. The broth was nothing like the typical Chinese mutton soup which tends to be clear and excessively herbal. This was more like lamb-kotsu - creamy and richly flavoured where the foreground was a showcase of flavour from the lamb with an undertone of herbs and spices in the background.
Order of noodles also came with its own lamb broth which tasted a little different from the yang kut teh, but no less delicious. This was called Vit's instant noodles in the bill.
One could order you tiao (油条) to soak in to the lamb hot pot.
Lamb bones which had marrow inside and gelatinous bits around the edges. They had thoughtfully provided straws for the marrow. The broth that came with this was richer and saltier than those in the yang kut teh and the instant noodles.
Lamb dumplings/gyoza/锅贴.
Not as prominent lamb flavouring in the meat stuffings but these weren't bad tasting.
Dessert was chilled & peeled cherry tomatoes with sour plum (酸梅) soup. Nice.
