La Zi Ji Crunch from KFC

I haven't had the local KFC in a while and was surprised at the quality of the chicken. It's actually decent. 😬 This was their limited time la zi ji (辣子鸡) styled fried chicken with dried chilli, a bit of Sichuan peppercorn and I noticed sesame seeds. The mala-esque flavour was there albeit moderated for the mass market. It's not a bad rendition. It's just not so spicy. Jollibee's spicy chicken and the McSpicy packs more heat. 

Last Christ-mas, I......

...we made some food. Mostly experimental without formal recipes. Like a ham we got from NTUC with a glaze made from a reduction of mulled wine spices & some Finnish honey (don't ask), cloves and jam. Turned out to be really good and was definitely less costly than ones we used to order from a place that sells ribs.

Onion and bacon soup.

These were highly experimental based off some recipe short in TikTok - eggwashed Vietnamese rice paper/bánh tráng with ham and cheese rolled into snails and oven baked. An alternate universe gỏi cuốn minus vegetables.

A second batch was made to include crab tomalley. 😬

Didn't make this obviously but the Vacherin Mont d'Or made it to table with breads and jams and honey. 👍🏼

Sky Sky Fried Chicken, Great World

Hmmmm.....pretty good fried chicken from Sky Sky Fried Chicken (#B1-K124 Great World, 1 Kim Seng Promenade). The batter was adequately salted with loads of crunch on the outside and the meat was moist and tender. Not to mention that these were pretty sizeable as well. There's also deep fried chicken livers which were freshly fried on order. Getting the 3 piece here was also cheaper than....all the other fast food fried chicken.

Ube & sweet corn shake from Shake Shack

Flavour of the month from Shake Shack. Tasted like ube with coconut. Not tasting the sweet corn in this one.

Crispy Mac ‘N Cheesy Wrap from McD

Latest from McD. It's pretty much the same thing as their regular breakfast wrap with the hash brown inside replaced by a fried mac & cheese patty. Visually, they looked pretty similar. Couldn't tell the difference from a glance.

Texturally, this was also similar to the regular breakfast wrap. The taste was where it mostly differed. This one has discernible nacho cheese flavour while the one with hash browns didn't and tasted like...it has hash brown. I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed it. 😬

Lemonade espresso from Gyutan-Tan

We stopped at Gyutan-Tan (B2-32 Ngee Ann City, 391 Orchard Road, tel : +65 8321 3359) for a drink. Got myself a lemonade espresso. Nice one. Citrus-y sweet lemonade in decent coffee with fizz and ice.

Paru Power! cow lungs chips

Paru chips? Why not?! 😋

Never realized such a thing even existed. They're spiced, crispy like fish crackers and has a beefy flavour like paru. Not bad at all if you like paru.

Found them at this shop (#01-42 Golden Landmark Shopping Complex, 390 Victoria Street).

Year XVII. 23.M2. It's been 17 years of small potato-ing. Some months back, a comment was left on the blog about....well, blogs such as this having fallen out of trend. Guess I'm one of the outcast dead. But I'm also pretty sure this will outlast The Horus Heresy.

Mr Coconut's Mao Shan Wang shake

I admit that I like myself a Mr Coconut once in a while. What got me hyped up was their mao shan wang coconut shake for July/August. It turned out to be a beverage worthy of its name from that ball of durian pulp and coconut meat they put into the drink. Got me burping durian after that too so that's how I also know it's good. 👍🏼

Parmesan Truffle Chicken and Zhng Zinger from KFC

Those who never learn history are condemned to repeat it. I felt like I wanted to check these out from KFC hoping that maybe, just maybe, things have gotten better. 

When I get Jollibee, the first elicited response when I take a bite of their chicken is usually a silent 'yummy!'. KFC usually gets me to 'fuck, this tasted unhealthy!' There's a bit of truffle flavour and it was pretty cheesy in a cheap cheesy way for the parts with the cheese powder. The crusty bits got to me after a while because the parts that didn't have cheese were bland. Meat's a bit dry.

Despite apprehension, I got the Zhng Zinger anyway. Since I've already transgressed, might as well poke around. Apparently this was inspired by some TikTok dude. Chicken was pretty tender. With the hot sauce and the pickles, it was actually not bad. Until the pickles ran out in a few bites. That's when it regressed back into a regular Zinger with dry buns. Couldn't taste the onion rings in it all. Cheese? Do you even see it? Will take Popeyes' chicken sandwich over this any day.

It might have been psychological at this point but eating the cheese fries felt like a coat in the arteries minus the satisfaction. The best part of this visit was probably gulping down the Coke Zero to wash away all the grease.

Lay's Roasted Cumin Lamb Skewer Flavor from Scarlett Supermarket

I was apprehensive but curious at the same time when I saw these on the shelves. Turned out to be much better than I had imagined. Was surprised by how they managed to capture those 羊肉串 flavours in the chips.

Not bad...this Intense Chocolate Gao Shiok-ah-ccino from Starbucks tasted like the slushee version of their hot chocolate. Definitely gao in my books.

Rose flavoured Lay's potato chips from Scarlett Supermarket

Picked up a bunch of unusual sounding snacks from Scarlett Supermarket (思家客) at Chinatown Point. We haven't been here for a while and some new things have snuck into their shelves. Can you see it? The rose potato chips...

Here's a closer look at it.

The speckles make them look like whole grain chips. There's definitely rose flavour in there so what I was trying to get used to was saltiness because I've only experienced rose with desserts or bandung. They're also a little tangy.

Starshine Coke

Found this at 7-11 and got it out of curiosity. I don't know if my finger's on the right spot but this tasted like sour plum (酸梅).

Porcini mushroom chocolate from Bootle's

I bought this from Bootle's months ago and totally forgot about them after leaving it in the fridge. They're apparently made specially for Bootle's. Recently, I bought more flavoured ones at their closing sale and came across this while packing those newer chocolates. Porcini flavoured chocolate? How could I not try.

Sadly, I couldn't taste that porcini flavour. There was something a little different about the flavour but that was about all I could detect. Not mushroomy at all. It was not a bad chocolate though.

Flash Coffee, One Raffles Place

Never noticed Flash Coffee (#B1-34 One Raffles Place, 1 Raffles Place) before so we bought an Americano (which was neither aromatic nor strong coffee) and a turmeric latte. I liked the latte. There's turmeric powder, some spices (I detected cinnamon) and sugar in frothed milk. It was a much more enjoyable drink than their coffee, cheap as those might be.
