Henry's Chicken Rice, Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre

Henry's Chicken Rice, Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre

I've heard a bit about Henry's Chicken Rice (#02-84 Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre, 31 Commonwealth Crescent). About how the owner used to apprentice under an ex chef from Chatterbox. About about the stall being named after a son Henry that didn't have interest in taking over. There's chatter on how the proprietors behave like they have a chip on the shoulder and also the queue that one should look out for during peak hours. You know. Stuff. About them. Don't know how much is true.

Except for the queue. That I can attest to because I ended up in it. Snuck up on me and appeared out of nowhere. Fortunately, it wasn't too slow moving.

Rice was light tasting. Not bad but I don't think it's something most people would give credit to when they judge chicken rice. I didn't mind it because even as it was light, there was enough flavour to be chicken rice. What these lightweight flavours meant was there would be no dilemma with chilli or no chilli. Their garlic-ky and lime-y chilli packed a bit of bitterness and heat. Not a bad chilli.

They were already out of drumsticks (鸡腿) before 11.30am so I ended up asking for ji wei (鸡尾) - the part I no longer am sure is from which part of the chicken. It looked like a meaty rear end of the bird today.

Most people seemed to be ordering the "roast" chicken. Heard it was what they were known for so I got that too. Not bad. Some parts tasted more salty than others. If one were looking for outstanding, I don't think this will be it.

I wouldn't mind eating at Henry's. But I won't miss it if I never had a chance again. That's how it was.

Huber's - Easter Sunday

Huber's Bistro, easter

Easter Sunday lunch at Huber's. They have a bunch of lamb items on their menu this week. While I was tempted by a few of them, I stuck to something that was only available today. A spit roasted lamb which they carved and served on order. Yeah, they had a spit out back for that whole lamb.

Huber's Bistro, beef tartar savoyer

But we were here early enough that the breakfast menu was still available. Had been curious about their "Savoyer" style beef tartare so why not to start? I don't know what Savoyer referred to but this was a delicious beef tartare with well moderated seasoning. Not as in your face as Le Bistrot du Sommelier (we liked that one too) with the seasoning and definitely more enjoyable than the one at Coucou.

I thought the Tomme de Savoie sauce they drizzled over was a good call. So yummy.

Huber's Bistro, roast lamb

Their Easter spit roasted lamb was served with ratatouille and potatoes. Jus they drizzled over was nice, I wished they gave some bread to mop them up with.

Huber's Bistro, lamb chops

These lamb chops were from the regular menu. Simple and nicely done.

Old Nonya, Maxwell Food Centre

Old Nonya, Maxwell Food Centre

We were getting dinner from Maxwell Food Centre over the weekend. Old Nonya's (#01-04 Maxwell Food Centre, 1 Kadayanallur Steet, tel : +65 8366 9311) chicken rendang with rice looked appealing.

Old Nonya, chicken rendang rice

Nice. The rendang was nutty and lemak - not much heat but the spices in the rempah had a good balance within all the rich creaminess which was delicious with the white rice. Their tangy achar tasted like the ones my late grandmother used to make and I liked it.

Hammee's - from a cheeseburger experience to a nasi ayam goreng experience

Hammee's, nasi ayam goreng

Talk about change. Hammee's no longer makes burgers. Or at least they aren't making them now. They did mention that it is not the end yet for those burger. Meanwhile, they've unveiled something that has been working on the side for some time apparently - nasi ayam goreng a.k.a. fried chicken rice. Came with an updated stall sign to match.

I wanted to leave things with 'it's not bad' but I thought that sounded a little detached. I enjoyed it.

One got to choose between chicken rice or coconut rice - mine was the latter. Needed a bit more salt but otherwise pretty well done with the coconut flavour. Fried chicken had a nice crisp turmeric batter that sealed in the juices in the meat. Loved the dried shrimp flavour from their home made sambal. At least I thought it was dried shrimp. Achar also nice. Will come back again to try their chicken rice.

Chocolate Whopper from Burger King

Burger King, chocolate whopper

A colleague suggested BK for lunch today and the first thought was that I'll probably end up with their Ultimate Angus Double Mushroom Swiss. Then I saw this on the splash page of their order kiosk and immediately decided this might be more interesting to try instead.

It's a Whopper minus mayo and lettuce. I've also just noticed that their sesame bun doesn't have that much sesame. Looked cheap. There's some chocolate sauce drizzled in. Don't know what kind but it didn't taste or look like the watery Hershey's that normally gets used. Didn't taste bad with the light chocolate sweetness. That being said, this has to be taken with the understanding that BK's Whopper had never been good since ages ago so they're still that.

More stuff from Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心)

Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心), steamed glutinous rice pork dumpling

Breakfast-y Cantonese food for dinner at Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心). That's what's been happening lately. We ordered their pork glutinous rice dumpling for the first time.

Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心), steamed glutinous rice pork dumpling

The dumpling was very tender. Filled with mung beans, bits of pork, pork fat and chestnuts. Deliciously savoury with the sauce that came with it.

Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心), bbq pork collar

Their bbq pork collar was okay-ish. The meat was marinated that the flavour from the marinade was mostly it along with some of the caramelized bits. It wasn't bad tasting, just won't be ordering them again.

Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心), steamed mushroom dumplings

There's mushroom dumplings. Good mushroom-y flavour going on. As much as we enjoyed them, I felt the ones from Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine were better tasting.
