Stirring tea at Café&Meal MUJI

Muji Cafe

Came across a couple of things that sounded interesting at Café&Meal MUJI.

Muji Cafe

That hemisphere which looked like it reflected a galaxy of stars was called pepper chocolate dome with miso crème brulée. Don't know how the last part of the name fits and I couldn't taste miso. There's peppery notes in the chocolate though.

Muji Cafe

That's a matcha and mandarin orange Swiss roll. We all know what a matcha Swiss roll is. But not all of us has had it with bits of mandarin orange in it. Not bad.

Ah Yen Traditional Fried Pork, Food Republic @ Breadtalk IHQ

Ah Yen Traditional Fried Pork, Breadtalk IHQ

I read about these guys (Food Republic, #01-06 BreadTalk IHQ, 30 Tai Seng Street) from Sabah setting up shop here and it appeared that mostly good things were said about them. They're known for their Sandakan fried pork noodles which include mentioned pork which has been marinated in fermented red bean curd. That flavour was pretty intense and the meat salty with a light crunch. Noodles tasted run of the mill and I needed that chilli sauce to power through. I kinda liked those pieces of 油条 though. Maybe I'll try their soup kuey teow another time.

Cheesy Spinach Beef Burger from Burger King

Burger King, cheesy spinach beef burger

I took the bait. This was essentially a cheeseburger with a "cheesy spinach" patty. It's a little oiler than I expected and I'm thinking maybe half of it was just crust. It did add a bit of crunch to the burger. Could taste neither spinach nor cream cheese though. Actually, I couldn't tell what it was. If I was asked, which I've noted I haven't been, I'd say this should be at best worth half of what they were charging. What I was getting more from this sandwich was the smokiness from the beef, the salty cheese and the onions doing their job cutting through it all.

Eng Kee Chicken Wings, Beauty World Food Centre

Eng Kee Chicken Wings, Beauty World Food Centre

Finally tried this branch of Eng Kee Chicken Wings (#04-46 Beauty World Centre, 144 Upper Bukit Timah Road). It's the same stall as what I've previously mentioned as at Redhill Food Centre. Bee hoon, eggs and otah were passable. They're edible but not great accompaniment and people do get them when they come for their fried chicken wings.

Chicken wings were tasty. Sufficiently salted to bring out the savoury flavouring on the lightly crunchy surface. Just like the last time, they're easily eaten even with chopsticks because the meat comes off pretty easily so I guess that's pretty consistent there.

Lontong with hot dog from Nusa & Tara

Nusa & Tara, lontong hot dog

Breakfast at Nusa & Tara. First time getting lontong with hotdogs and I've gotta admit this was good. A salty meatiness added on that's almost as satisfying as their spiced paru. Everytime I'm here, I tell myself that I don't come back here often enough.

The banana pie from Dona Manis Cake Shop

Dona Manis Cake Shop, banana pie

Dropped by Dona Manis (#B1-93, Katong Shopping Centre, 865 Mountbatten Road, tel : +65 6440 7688) for a slice of their banana pie since we were in the vicinity. The shop's sequestered in the basement of the building. I've been introduced to it some years back and I guess posterity demands that I get a picture of it up.

It's pretty unique as pies go here because it's a local pie and one doesn't typically find bananas pies. Crust is buttery with coconut and bits of almond. Banana's sweet and melty beneath that crust. Definitely a gem.
