Tong Kee Cooked Food (童記熟食), Tiong Bahru Food Centre

Tong Kee Cooked Food (童記熟食), wanton mee

We've noticed people having wanton mee from Tong Kee Cooked Food (#02-24 Tiong Bahru Food Centre, 30 Seng Poh Road) before and thought they looked good. What killed the cat prevailed today.

Here're some reasons why we will be coming back. The wiry texture of the noodles were enjoyable. Chilli sauce that went with those noodles were also respectable. On top of that, the char siew had nice caramelized bits and were tender. Wantons were also pretty tasty. They had gotten all the main components of wanton mee done nicely. All for a princely sum of $3.

Singapore Lor Mee (新加坡鹵面), Tiong Bahru Food Centre

Singapore Lor Mee (新加坡鹵面), Tiong Bahru Food Centre

Here's a generically named lor mee stall at Tiong Bahru Food Centre (#02-32 Tiong Bahru Food Centre, 30 Seng Poh Road) - the third lor mee stall located there after another generically named but popular Tiong Bahru Lor Mee and the other Lor Mee 178 with the shark nuggets. Don't remember if I've ever eaten at the latter two - but then again, I've never been big on lor mee.

We tried this because we were curious about their fried cod fish lor mee. The batter was thicker than I liked and there wasn't much flavour in the cod. Not gonna be getting that again for sure. The noodles were pretty decent tasting but the same could be said for many other lor mee once it's been doused with some vinegar, garlic and chilli. As it had been with other experiences, I liked the bowl better once the gravy had gotten less starchy.

Fish soup from Bukit Merah Lane

Fish soup from Bukit Merah Lane

This fish soup stall (127 Bukit Merah Lane 1) is right next door to the Yang Zhou Fried Hokkien Mee that's formerly at Beo Crescent.  Looking back, this was also the very same coffee shop that previously housed the short lived Dracula and Funny Lasagna years ago. Haha.

I got myself a bowl of 双鱼. I liked the chunky slices of boiled fish. The fried fish had crispy batter and that batter was a little too generously salted in my opinion. What might not be so apparent were the generous portions of cabbage in the soup.

Speaking of soup, flavour from the broth was intense but I was not sure what to make out of it because it was both heavily salted and also pretty sweet at the same time without much of the fish flavour.

These guys seemed pretty popular judging from the queue. I don't mind giving them another go if I didn't have to waste my life in the queue but I don't think that's ever going to happen.

The Royale from Crave Nasi Lemak

Crave Nasi Lemak, Royale

I didn't think highly of Crave the last time I had it. But I managed to get their nasi lemak, specifically their Royale, for a couple of dollars off the usual price so I decided to give them another go. There was little similarity in the rice with their progenitor and I wasn't exactly surprised with that. I couldn't taste any salt in it and I have heard from reliable sources that there were properly salted rice at the other outlets so they're inconsistent. The rest of the ingredients weren't bad. I did enjoy those fried chicken wings. They were deliciously savoury with a solid crispy batter which tasted like those from Ponggol Nasi Lemak.

Lemon chicken rice with 白鸡尾 from Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice (中峇鲁海南起骨雞飯)

Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice (中峇鲁海南起骨雞飯)

I had mentioned previously about trying their fried lemon chicken thinking that their's was probably like any other lemon chicken rice, with a lemon-y syrup/sauce drizzled over the breaded deep fried meat. There wasn't any of that. It was just fried chicken. Since I got this in the early part of the day, it was still pleasantly crispy. And yes, I added 白鸡尾 and a hard boiled egg to that.

The Jolly Spaghetti from Jollibee

Jollibee, Jolly Spaghetti

We've had fried chicken from Jollibee numerous times but have never ordered their Jolly Spaghetti because it never looked appealing to me. I've also heard comments about how it was sweet and that didn't help endear them to me. For some reasons, we ordered and tried recently and it didn't taste half as bad as I had imagined. There was a light beefy flavour to the slight sweet sauce and the noodles weren't as soggy as I thought they might have been.
