A kedgeree from The Cellar Door

A kedgeree as I've learnt recently, is an Anglo Indian boiled rice dish with fish and eggs. They originated from British colonials in India. This one from The Cellar Door was precisely that and probably also a variant of possibly many renditions. It did contain small bits of smoked fish (mackerel I think) and diced tomatoes. Just that and the mildly creamy curried rice. This curried rice had just enough of the curry aroma and flavour but none of the spiciness normally associated. Even Japanese curries would be considered fairly strong in comparison with this. In spite of the mildness, I thought it was a comforting dish. I think there might have been yoghurt or cream in the rice. It tasted a little bit like a dry risotto. Does anyone know where else can kedgeree be found?

Tanglin Cookhouse, Tanglin Mall

Tanglin Cookhouse, Tanglin Mall

Upmarket legacy food from the British Indian times + generic cafe stuff with a smattering of local influences at Tanglin Cookhouse (#01-106 Tanglin Mall, 163 Tanglin Road, tel : +65 6235 9382). It's their take on them in this era anyway.

Tanglin Cookhouse, mocha

Mocha - something I don't have very often. I kept my expectations really low after hearing about how unsatisfying it might be and those really low expectations might have helped. Didn't taste bad. Generic coffee/chocolate flavoured milk. Wouldn't say that it's bad but I haven't much else to say about it also.

Tanglin Cookhouse, kedgeree

Tried their kedgeree. It's actually pretty nice tasting as a rice dish. Lots of flavour coming from the from the ingredients like smoked haddock, parsley, lemon, tumeric flavoured rice and a sweet tomato chutney that reminded me of butter chicken. Less curry-y than a smokier home made one I've previously had. Or possibly even the one from The Cellar Door ages ago.

Tanglin Cookhouse, sticky date pudding

Had mixed feelings on sticky date pudding. Loved the pudding, the banana and Nutella soil. I thought the savoury papadum with its bit of spice and savouriness paired well with the dessert. What I didn't like were the granolas which felt like an obligatory afterthought sprinkle and that diabetes inducing quantity of sweet toffee sauce.

SLATE., Purvis Street

Slate (#01-00, 24 Purvis Street, tel : +65 6261 1724). Food's okay. Cafe in the day time and from what I read, contemporary Asian restaurant in the evening. Which means plenty to plenty of people so I'm not going into that territory.

Their lemongrass lemonade drink was not bad, but kinda small for what they were charging.

Ordered their G&G sandwich because there was suppose to be Gammon ham and Gruyère and fried bread. It was open faced. I hadn't been expecting that. Liked the ham and pretty okay-ish truffle Gruyère sauce. It's one of those I don't mind eating if I'm here or in the vicinity but wouldn't come all the way here for it kind of thing. I did enjoy their salad on the side......

...salad that also came with their Side Way Omelette. Side ways because it's filled with crab and crabs walk sideways. So beside crab meat there was also smoked crab fat (obviously kani miso) and tobiko. It's okay, not outstanding. Omelette had a Asian style to it.

Back to the salad. It's kinda like a mix between a generic mesclun + Thai mango/papaya salad. Minus fish sauce, heat and sugar. Also tasted nicer than how I described it. Yes, there were strips of mango  (or was that papaya) and fantastic crunchy textures.

They have smoked fish fried rice on menu. It's edible. Wished there was more smoked fish and tobiko in it because those would have made up for the fact that it wasn't an incredible fried rice. I had initially thought that this might have been some sort of kedgeree but I guess not.
