Bubur terigu (大麦) from Xi Le Ting (喜樂亭)

The Malay name I'm more familiar with is bubur terigu which translates to wheat porridge. The Chinese refer to it as da mai (大麦). It's a sweet porridge made from wheat with sugar (rock or brown) and coconut milk. From Xi Le Ting (喜樂亭). Sweet but not cloyingly so with the fragrance of coconut milk. The top left was red bean soup from them. Also good. Xi Le Ting only serves for Chinese desserts. These two, green bean soup and cheng tng. They're all delicious. We had all four this time round and never felt the surfeit from sweetness.

GO Noodle House, 313@Somerset

This (#B3-37/38 313@Somerset, 313 Orchard Road, tel : +65 6363 5323) is from a chain in Malaysia. Haven't heard anything about them before they set up shop here but I'm guessing that they must be pretty successful with almost 40 outlets in their home ground and this one is right smack in the middle of town. I've been wanting to try their noodles for a while. 

That's their Hakka noodles up there. Very different from a previous Hakka noodle (and much more tasty) I've had. Good texture going on with the toppings but the noodles on their own weren't impressive at all. They provided a sambal on the side which was quite kick ass; that made this bowl/plate much more palatable. Now what were these guys known for again?

Swee Lee Western Food, Whampoa Makan Place

Old school local Hainanese styled western food stall (#01-12 Whampoa Makan Place, 90 Whampoa Drive) at the afternoon cluster of the food centre. This half spring chicken was pretty well done. A solid crisp on the exterior without excessive grease. Meat on the inside was still tender and filled with juices. While it triggered memories of Seng Huat Western Food at Zion, this one was definitely a better done bird.

亮亮 Fried Carrot Cake . Fried Oyster, Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre

Noticed the pan fried radish cake going on at this stall (#02-69 Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre, 31 Commonwealth Crescent) while getting desserts from next door at Xi Le Ting (喜樂亭). This was the small plate with extra eggs. I enjoyed it. This was done in the style that came in smaller bits rather than chunkier pieces. I'm good with both types. Will be back to try the black one the next time.

Wham Poa Satay Bee Hoon (黄埔唦嗲米粉), Whampoa Makan Place

I was told that the words "唦嗲" from the name of the stall were the incorrect ones but that was what their sign said. The correct one is 潮州沙爹米粉 (#01-38 Whampoa Makan Place, 90 Whampoa Drive). 

Anyways, satay bee hoon - something I haven't had in a long while. The first thing I noticed was the pretty consistent texture of the gravy from the crushed peanuts. It's also a little watery. Not a bad tasting gravy but not outstanding as well. The toppings were good though - prawns were naturally crunchy & sweet and the pork slices were tender. But the gravy's not calling out to me.

Prata Boom from Prata Alley

Came across Prata Alley (#01-12 321 Clementi, 321 Clementi Avenue 3, tel : +65 6924 2037) and wanted to do masala tea. Ended up with their prata boom as well because curiosity and I didn't mind something sweet then. From what they described it's prata with butter and sugar. Might be ghee methinks. I didn't dislike it but I did feel it had too much sugar. Melted sugar was coagulating on the plate. And $5 for two pieces - this place was pricey. But I guess someone has to pay for air conditioning rental in Clementi Central so.... 

Yes, they came in pairs with no option to order just one.
