Re-visiting Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶)

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶)

The Old World Bak Kut Teh shop has shifted from Blk 747 pretty close to the MRT to the current premise at Blk 732 (732 Yishun Ave 5, #01-380, tel : +65 9388 5288) where the old Botak Jones in Yishun used to be. These were from a couple of visits.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), bak kut teh 肉骨茶

Pork ribs were still pretty tender and easily slipped off the bone. After having the broth a few times now, I conclude that they're just not as intense or as peppery as I generally prefer some others. Like I've previously mentioned, not a deal breaker. Price was reasonable for 3 pretty meaty ribs.

If you're still reeling from the first picture on top, the pork ribs were also good with the garlicky/lime-y green chilli sauce which is also available at their pork soup outfit, Old Village.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), eggs

Braised eggs. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), pickled mustard greens

What's different about their pickled mustard greens was that they're served chilled. I love these with the dark soya sauce/sliced chilli on rice.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), tau kwa 豆干

Not bad tau kwa.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), you tiao 油条

Crispy you tiao to dunk in the bak kut teh broth. These were a little hard/crunchy. Only good as a sponge but I prefer those airy/bread-y ones that I used to get at Old Street Bak Kut Teh.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), seafood cheese bee hoon

One of the dishes I was looking forward to from Old World Bak Kut Teh was their seafood cheese bee hoon. There's a version with lobster which we didn't get. The creamy bee hoon was pretty rich tasting, cheesy and smoky at the same time. Also had a taste that reminded me of curry. Plenty of chopped up chunks of garlic in it as well. Nice this one.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), fried pig intestines 炸大肠

Deep fried pig intestines (炸大肠) had different textures on both occasions we had them. The first time was harder and chewier. The second time had a good crisp and tender chewiness on the insides.

Old World Bak Kut Teh (老世界肉骨茶), sweet intestines 粉肠

Braised sweet intestines (粉肠) were flavour infused from their braising broth, tender and lightly chewy. Not bad.

300g of lamb and 7 karubi tasting at Yakiniku-GO Plus

Yakiniku-GO Plus, Suntec

Because I enjoyed the lamb from the previous visit, we came back for more.

Yakiniku-GO Plus, lamb

300 grams of thinly sliced sheep leg for the hot grill. While 300gs sounded like much, it didn't feel like as much when we were eating it.

Yakiniku-GO Plus, 7 karubi tasting set

Tried their karubi sampler. Not bad as a whole but now that we've tried it, it'll be a much more focused order the next time. The A5 wagyu gokujou karubi was good!

Laksa Delight, teh c frappe and pulut hitam pie from McD

McDonald's, laksa delight prawn

So we tried the limited time Laksa Delight burger from McD. This was the one with the prawn patty.

McDonald's, laksa delight prawn

While the sauce was identifiable for the laksa flavour, it didn't taste exactly like laksa. It's pretty coconut-y and a little sweet. For some reasons, also reminded me of butter chicken. Prawn patty was not bad though.

McDonald's, teh c frappe

Think they got the Teh C Frappé flavour right. But I thought it was too sweet.

McDonald's, pulut hitam pie

I'm generally game for pulut hitam. So let's see what the pie from McD is made of.

McDonald's, pulut hitam pie

Looked just like any of McD's fried pies from the outside.

McDonald's, pulut hitam pie

The fillings did taste like pulut hitam. But it was quite mild. So what didn't work with the the pie was how even the light saltiness from the pie's crust overwhelmed the pulut hitam fillings.

Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun (石磨腸粉), Toa Payoh

Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun (石磨腸粉), spinach prawn

Here's breakfast at Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun (#02-22 Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre, 127 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh). The green one above was made with spinach. Got mine with egg and prawns. Most of the flavour came from salty sweetness of the sauce and the dried shrimpy chilli which was pretty good tasting.

Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun (石磨腸粉), dragonfruit char siew

This one was dragonfruit pink with char siew. Not much char siew. Rice roll tasted similar to the green one. Neither rolls had a particularly rice-y taste.

Botak Jones, Holland Drive

Botak Jones, lamb chops

Botak Jones (43 Holland Drive), the brand that kickstarted this blog. Like 15 years or so ago. They've been resurrected after some business strife but they aren't the force that they used to be. We've much more options at this price point nowadays and in retrospect, the food looked less impressive today than it did in their glory days the past.

I don't know what to make of their lamb chops. Yes, those are lamb chops - marinated with rosemary (what era is this already?!), slathered in a creamy mushroom sauce which was pretty much also their mushroom soup and then a vinegary mint sauce? What am I expected to taste here? None of the flavours of the lamb I'm sure. This was the larger $22 portion and almost half of it were bones.

Coleslaw is a little sour. For some reasons I had imagined a gratin dauphinoise for their double baked cheese potato. Tasted like mashed potatoes with cheese.

Sukiya (すき家), Century Square

Sukiya (すき家), spring onion egg gyudon

So I mentioned wanting to try the spring onion gyudon from Sukiya previously. Got this from their outlet at Tampines (#01-21 Century Square, 2 Tampines Central 5). It looked a lot better on the picture from their menu. I know, shame on me. I somehow missed the mention of the sweet and spicy Korean chilli pepper sauce and ended up not expecting that. Took away some of the savouriness. The spring onions looked a little sad and was haphazardly snipped up. Barely any flavour coming from those too. #disappointed

I have the impression that the shop at Suntec have better standards so maybe I should stick to them.
