Revisiting Fook Kin

Fook Kin, Killiney Road

It's been a few years since we were last at Fook Kin. This restaurant has the worst online ordering UX I've ever come across to date.

Fook Kin, ice tea lychee sorbet

Ice tea with lychee sorbet. Tea was pretty sweet, not exactly fragrant. Probably half the cup was ice. Ditto for that ice lemon tea below

Fook Kin, ice lemon tea

Lemon tea required additional 50 cents. That's the 50 cents worth of lemon up there. Not great beverages here. Quality feels like coffeeshops that try to rip you off by giving you fillers and on top of that, restaurant prices.

Fook Kin, minced meat mee pok

Their mee pok with minced meat was pretty good tasting. Love the firm and chewy texture of the mee pok that's coated with their savoury lardy sauce. Would have been great if not for the sad portions of minced pork.

Fook Kin, wok hei fried rice roast pork crunchies

Something called wok hei fried rice with roast pork crunchies. Was hoping to at least get decent yang zhou fried rice standards but it didn't taste like that. Rice looked scorched but I'm not tasting smokiness. Roast pork mostly not crunchy. Also greasy in a way that I wasn't comfortable with.

Fook Kin, golden truffle roast duck

Was initially curious by their truffle duck and momentarily wondered what ingenious rendition they might have come up with. In retrospect, it's just regular roast duck, probably just sprayed with truffle oil. Duck's dry. Not great. Not glad to be paying about $30 for an upper quarter as well.

Fook Kin, Killiney Road

I do not Fook Kin ❤️ this place. Here's a reminder to self, don't come back.

$5.50 mee pok from SK Noodle House

SK Noodle House, prawn noodle

Seems confusing/inconsistent. Maybe I just don't know what I'm reading. The last time I got their $5.50 mee kia bowl, there were more toppings and no change in noodle portions. Today's $5.50 has both extra toppings and noodles. 🤔

Treasures Yi Dian Xin (一点心), roast pork rice 烧肉饭

Roast pork rice from Treasures Yi Dian Xin. Delicious with mustard.

More cai png from the food court at Oxley Bizhub

cai png economy rice

More cai png from the food court at Oxley Bizhub. Also $5 like the last time. Same fried chicken, some cabbage and chopped beans with minced pork which apparently contains basil. I hadn't realise until the aniseed-y flavour came through along with a bit of heat from some chilli padi. Not bad.

Cô Chung, Boat Quay

Cô Chung, Boat Quay

We've noticed Cô Chung at Plaza Singapura. Have seen the queues and wondered about them. This was their branch behind Boat Quay (4-5 Lorong Telok, tel : +65 8876 8137).

Cô Chung, vietnamese coffee

Iced coffee was not bad. Strong and milky, sweet without being excessively so.

Cô Chung, eggs banh mi

Egg bánh mì with added on pate. I didn't it was cool that I have to top up an additional $5.90 for pate in a $11.90 bánh mì that I could barely taste.

Cô Chung

Disclaiming that pictures are for illustration purposes only doesn't cut it for me. That in my opinion is a deliberate lie. Intended misinformation. This was how it looked ☝🏽 on the menu.

Cô Chung, eggs banh mi

Anyway, it didn't taste good. Baguette was a bit hard instead of crisp and airy. Even NamNam's textbook rendition beats this. Bánh Mì Saigon kicks its ass hard. The defunct Viet9 at Toa Payoh central was a better eat. 123 ZÔ would rip this to shreds. And......I think I've made my point.

Cô Chung, stir fried beef pho

Bún with sautéed beef. Expected the sauce to be fishy and limey but it wasn't. I'm not even sure what we tasted. Beef was decent...but I was kinda hoping it would be shabu thin.

Cô Chung, gỏi cuốn

Gỏi cuốn tasted pretty carb-y. Prawns were small and the wrap was damp. What's that peanut sauce they were using?

More cai png at Jing Shu Shi (京熟食)

Jing Shu Shi (京熟食), cai fan

End of day selections from Jing Shu Shi. Stewed cabbage, tau kwa with bean sprouts, hard boiled egg and surprisingly tender black pepper sauced pork. I asked for the assam fish curry today which wasn't particularly assam-y but I like it better than their regular curry. Pretty pleased with this.
