Mee pok with extra meatballs from Soon Heng Pork Noodles (顺兴肉脞麵)

Soon Heng Pork Noodles (顺兴肉脞麵), mee pok extra meatballs

Got the larger bowl of mee pok with extra meatballs from Soon Heng Pork Noodles for breakfast.

Soon Heng Pork Noodles (顺兴肉脞麵), meatballs

So that's six meatballs and three wantons there. All the bowl needed was a splash of sliced chilli infused light soya sauce. 👍🏼

Soon Heng Pork Noodles (顺兴肉脞麵), Neil Road

Pretty happy with the bowl except for the fried lard (猪油渣). In spite of appearances, these were on the verge of turning rancid. I remember the last time I added them and they weren't any good as well.

Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak, Amoy Street Food Centre

Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak, nasi lemak ayam berempah

What got my attention was the huge fried chicken thigh berempah from Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak (#02-119 Amoy Street Food Centre, 7 Maxwell Road). Nicely done with a flavourful dark & crusty exterior paired with very moist meat underneath. Sadly, their rice never rose above the mediocrity that was the case with many other nasi lemak from the lack of salt - salt that could have brought out more flavour from the coconut that was infused in the rice. Not a fan of their sweet sambal as well but that shouldn't even have mattered if the rice had been good enough to eat on its own.

Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak, mutton rendang

I asked for a portion of the mutton rendang because I was curious. Didn't expect a full serving on a separate plate. Not a fan of it. The rendang was sweet with spices that were in your face. Lacked the richness and grace from the mellow of coconut milk like those from the Malay or Indonesian renditions.

3 pats of butter, 2 beef patties and a partridge in a pear tree

One Fattened Calf, butter burger

In retrospect, I might have gone a little overboard with this configuration of the butter burger from One Fattened Calf. The additional patty threw off the balance of their meat to bread ratio and to add on, today's burger quality was not something I had expected. While the meat had a respectable char fragrance from all the nice browning, it was also fully cooked and very crumbly. And kinda devoid of beefiness. The patties were also disintegrating as I ate just like how the butter soaked buns were falling apart. What's happening here?

Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建館), One Raffles Place

Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建館), One Raffles Place

Stumbled upon Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (#B1-30 One Raffles Place, 1 Raffles Place) by chance at the area where Qin Ji Rougamo and Gochi-So Shokudo are located. While looking through the menu, we got the impression that every pork dish that they served was done with Iberico pork.

Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建館), hokkien mee

Tried their Hokkien mee which was not bad tasting. It's not the awesome-est out there but I thought it was competent enough and they did better than IL Fiore with a pretty flavourful stock and a generous load of ingredients including a few sweet prawns. A few squeezes of lime and their sambal adds to it.

Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建館), white pepper collagen pig stomach soup

Ordered a soup with shabu thin slices of Iberico pork, tripe and fish maw. Peppery and good drinking this one.

$1.95 mini boat noodles from Shiok Shiok Night Market

Shiok Shiok Night Market, mini boat noodles

The picture up there might not have accurately depicted how small the mini boat noodles were at Shiok Shiok Night Market (100 Orchard Road) because of the angle at which it was taken. It's a small bowl. Just a few mouthfuls. Not bad tasting to if I might add mostly because of the richness from the pronounced red fermented bean curd/namyu (南乳) flavour in the broth which I didn't expect.

What the picture didn't tell was that 3 to 4 of this little bowl would have made their regular sized bowl which costed $11.40. Definitely made more sense to get 3-4 of these than a regular bowl.

More fried chicken and pizza from Asian Food Mall at Lucky Plaza

Asian Food Mall at Lucky Plaza, Jollibee Shakey's

Got some fried chicken from Jollibee and pizza from Shakey's at Asian Food Mall.

The product shot of that spinach bacon glazed pizza like many product shots out there can be construed as deliberating misleading. It looked a lot nicer than the real thing.

Shakey's Pizza, spinach bacon glazed pizza

There was less spinach than I imagined. I think even Dr Oetker's frozen spinach pizza might have more spinach. Turkey bacon looked unnaturally rectangle and was not as sweet as what the word 'glazed' might have suggested. Pretty disappointing.

Mung bean dumpling (绿豆粽) from Jia Ji Mei Shi (佳记美食)

Jia Ji Mei Shi (佳记美食), mung bean dumpling (绿豆粽)

These local mung bean dumplings from Jia Ji Mei Shi were quite different from the Cantonese variety that's made by Imperial Treasure. I'm not even sure if they were the same type of dumpling even though they were both stuffed with mung beans and pork.

Jia Ji Mei Shi (佳记美食), mung bean dumpling (绿豆粽)

These were denser and less tender in comparison. Still pretty good eating. There's pork, lard and salted egg in them too. It's unexpectedly nice pairing with their generic sweet sauce and chilli.

More mille crepe from Lady M

Lady M, rose mille crepe

Revisiting Lady M. Not as impressed this time round. That rose mille crepe has rose flavouring only on the layer of jelly on the top. The bottom tasted like the regular mille crepe so with that kind ratio, it wasn't that rose-y.

Lady M, sakura mille crepe

There's a limited time sakura flavour. Tasted like some berry yoghurt to me. Couldn't get what's sakura about it except for the colour. Also, this one had a sweetness that got cloying fast. In comparison with the ones we had in the previous/first visit, today was unexpectedly disappointing.

Lady M, creme de la rose tea

Tried the creme de la rose with tea instead of coffee today. Not a bad rose flavoured milk tea but it was a little more than a little too sweet as it compounded on the mille crepe.

A couple more desserts from Jin Yu Man Tang Dessert Shop (金玉满堂甜品)

Jin Yu Man Tang Dessert Shop (金玉满堂甜品), south bridge road

Came by Jin Yu Man Tang for some dessert.

Jin Yu Man Tang Dessert Shop (金玉满堂甜品), double layered milk pudding coconut

Not a fan of their double layered milk with coconut cream because the flavour was mostly just coconut. Through that, I also didn't think their steamed milk would be very milky even if there wasn't any coconut cream in it. Can only confirm that another time though.

Jin Yu Man Tang Dessert Shop (金玉满堂甜品), fried custard walnut

This was fried custard. I know, right? The taste was kinda like a not so eggy steamed egg with the texture of custard. Not bad tasting. What marred this were the chopped walnuts that were just starting to cross over into being rancid.

Urban Roti, Syed Alwi Road

Urban Roti, Syed Alwi Road

We've seen Urban Roti (101 Syed Alwi Road, tel : +65 6209 5545) numerous times along Syed Alwi whenever we're in the area and/or if we're going to Mustafa.

Urban Roti, Syed Alwi Road

Decor's pretty "industrial" looking. Possibly the only Indian restaurant in Little India with that grey concrete walls and filament bulb lighting interior.

Urban Roti, samosa chaat

Started off with a samosa chaat - crushed samosa underneath the mint & tamarind chutney, curd and sev. So it's crunchy and crispy paired with sweet, sour, spicy and savoury with a hit of cumin. Not bad.

Urban Roti, naan

We had some cheese and garlic naan to go with a couple of curries.

Urban Roti, ur duo chicken curry

Curries like their UR Duo of Chicken Curry which featured both a tomato and a palak puree based curry which were redolent of the flavour of onions in them. Texture of both were creamy a viscous. Those chicken chunks in there were smokey...meaning they were chicken tikka.

Urban Roti, dal makhani

There was also a velvety rich dal makhani infused with warm spices, cream and butter.

Urban Roti, egg burji

Had an order of egg burji - eggs stir fried in dice tomatoes, onions, some spices and chilli. These turned out to be pretty good pairing with their cheese naan.

Urban Roti, masala chai

Masala chai was pre-sweetened. It's a lot sweeter than what I normally prefer but for some reasons, it didn't bother me so much this time.

The extra large chwee kueh from Bedok Chwee Kueh

Bedok Chwee Kueh

I read that Bedok Chwee Kueh upsized their chwee kuehs to double their regular sizes recently. Since we were in Chinatown Food Centre, we wanted to find out.

It's big. These were like the quarter pounder versions of chwee kueh because their previous regular size was already bigger than others and they're doubled again. $1.20 a piece and these tasted lighter than the looks suggested. 👍🏼

Hock Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (福来成潮州鱼圆肉脞面), Maxwell Food Centre

Hock Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (福来成潮州鱼圆肉脞面), Maxwell Food Centre

Hock Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (#01-26 Maxwell Food Centre, 1 Kadayanallur Street) is by the grand scion of the force behind Ah Ter Teochew Fishball Noodles. While the description of their noodles are different (Teochew fishball bak chor mee versus Teochew fishball noodles), they kinda make the same kind of noodles.

Hock Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (福来成潮州鱼圆肉脞面), mee pok

Which left me questioning, why was this ketchup-less bowl also a little sweet. Just like those times I've forgotten to ask Ah Ter to omit the ketchup. Anyways the flavour was not bad. I have no qualms coming back again. Strong punchy flavours, nice vinegar going on and they're sufficiently generous with lard (both 猪油 and 猪油渣).

Hock Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (福来成潮州鱼圆肉脞面), $10 soup

The soup had a touch of sweetness and clarity amid the savoury flavour that's perfumed by the aroma of fried shallots. Definitely tasting the dried sole infusion as well. Prawns were of good quality, doneness of the sliced livers were great and...the rest of the ingredients tasted run of the mill but well done. Pretty satisfying.

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, Changi Airport Terminal 1

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, Changi Airport Terminal 1

Kailash Parbat and Anjappar are in the same space in Changi Airport Terminal 1 (#03-20 Public Area, Terminal 1, 80 Airport Boulevard) with a common seating area and ordering counter. We've been to both restaurants at Syed Alwi Road years ago and didn't expect to see them together in Terminal 1. The former seem to be offering mostly chaat. The latter - it's been more than a decade.

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, sweet lassi

Sweet lassi. Okay tasting.

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, dahi puri

These dahi puri were from the Kailash Parbat section. Not getting the competency vibe from the guy in the stall and while these weren't bad tasting, it didn't feel as properly made as those we had at Syed Alwi.

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, mutton fried rice

There've a pretty competent mutton fried rice in the Anjappar section. The generously portioned rice (it's $15 by the way) was much lighter than the looks suggested. Mutton was tender and some of them had tendon-y/fatty bits. Nice.

Kailash Parbat & Anjappar, anjappar popular meal fish

There's also something call Anjappar Popular Meals which was a rice meal with a few vegetables dishes, curd, rasam, chapati, a dessert (we got a halwa) and a meat of choice. Our meat of choice today was the fish and the spicy/savoury/tangy curry for it was outstanding. Now I know where I can fall back to if I ever have to eat in Terminal 1 again.

Sweet glutinous rice with fried shallots from Millennium Glutinous Rice (千年糯米饭)

Millennium Glutinous Rice, sweet glutinous rice

I seem to recall that the salty glutinous rice from Millennium Glutinous Rice came with the fried shallots while the sweet one has peanuts. Don't know if I remembered that correctly now because I've gotten portions that were mixture of sweet and salty and also have gotten servings with both fried shallots and peanuts. Are there even relations? 😅 Anyways, I got a sweet portion today with just shallots. The aromatic shallots and the tender sweet rice was... a delicious combination.

Burger King's Ultimate Angus Classic BBQ

Burger King's Ultimate Angus Classic BBQ

So this was basically the child of Burger King's BBQ Turkey Bacon and a Whopper. For some reasons, I had never noticed from their menu that this has 'BBQ' in the name until today. I doubled the meat. Tasted pretty much like how it looked. Didn't over do the sauce. Burger was chunky, hefty and the patty's a bit dry-ish. With all the other stuff in there, I could barely register the cheese. Between this and the Ultimate Angus Mushroom Swiss, I prefer the latter.
